The creation of three Olympic areas, preferential traffic lanes,
and an upgraded public transportation system will facilitate movement within
the city.
To have three areas will allow:
- to decentralize the events while maintaining a link among them
- to involve the suburbs of the Capital by improving structures
- to respect Rome’s historic downtown sites
1. North: the Foro Italico area will use existing facilities and
is near-by training fields; the facilities of the Flaminio will be transformed
into a Stadium for 18,000 spectators. The Olympic Family will be accommodated
in the Via Veneto district

The Roma 2004 Bid file offers an in-depth explanation and description of
the infrastructural proposals:
- improvement of city transport (construction of two more underground
lines);
- the addition of a third lane on the main ring road;
- the reunification of Villa Pamphili park, today divided by a main highway.
The overall philosophy of the programme is based on maximum respect for
the environment. It is for this reason that the major environmental organisations,
WWF, Legambiente and Greenpeace have participated in the preparation of
the Dossier for Rome's candidature.
There are four principles behind the environmental factor in the Dossier:
- optimum use of existing and functioning venues;
- recovery and modernisation of existing and non-functioning venues;
- the provisional structures will not go to waste; they will be re-used
in the future.
